Better For You: Ergonomic Garden Tools
Ergonomic garden tools are the answer if you love gardening but hate the stiff, sore muscles a good session in the
yard causes, or if you suffer from arthritis but still want to get outside and
work in the garden. They cost a little
more than regular tools, but you’ll be amazed at the difference in comfort.
The most important feature of any ergonomic garden tool is the unique grip they
offer, which gives your upper arm and shoulder better leverage. This, in turn,
prevents undue stress on the hand, wrist and forearm. By ensuring a proper grip,
ergonomic garden tools, you make sure you’re not losing leverage and not doing
any injury to your joints and muscles.
More than anything, ergonomic garden tools are comfortable to use, easing your
afternoons in the yard or garden while preventing injury at the same time.
Smaller hand tools like shears, pruners and trowels are made with proper grips
to reduce stress on the wrist, forearm and elbow. Knee cushions and pivoting
garden seats are ideal for those who have trouble bending. Larger tools like
rakes are made with special handles to prevent awkward movements and alleviate
back pain.
Many types of tools--rakes, hoes and trowels--are made with different kinds of
ergonomic additions, so you can try out what feels best. Some even offer two
handles- one at the end of the tool and a smaller grip midway up the tool, for
complete control. If you’ve ever suffered from aches and pains after a day in
the garden, you’ll be amazed at the relief ergonomic garden tools have to offer.
