Garden Tool Storage

Garden tool storage is a common problem faced by gardeners. If you have so many tools, you will agree with me that storing them can be a source of concern. The tools which were supposed to make gardening easier now constitute a nuisance themselves. How can this problem be overcome? How can you store your garden tools?

Where do you store them? And when does it become important to take extra precautions? All these will be discussed here. In addition you will also learn the advantages of storing your garden tools properly and learn some practical tips from other gardeners like you.

How to store

Hanging - many hand garden tools have holes for hanging. They can easily be hung on a wall peg. Garden tool organizers, hangars and wall units are specially designed to accommodate many different garden tools. If you have so many hand tools, it would be wise to invest in one of them.

Another type of tool that you can hang on the wall is a water hose reel. There are special ones that allow this. Buying those types will help you in organizing your tool storage.

Shelving/Racking - You cannot hang some tools. They are either too big to hang or they come in special boxes as kits. It's easier to store these kinds of tools on shelves or racks in your garden tool shed. Take care to organize them so that you know where to find any tool at anytime. Another garden tool storage option is a garden tool cart. This very useful tool is a great asset to own when you have so many tools. In addition to it's ability to provide storage space for your garden tools, it also helps with tool organization and carrying while in the garden. More on Garden tool carts here.

Taking the right decision whether to hang a tool or rack it, will save you a lot of space in your garden tool storage area.

Places garden tools can be stored

Garage - Yes, you can use your garage. Most people don't park their cars in their garages. Even if you do, you could use some of the extra space wisely. Get a garden tool hangar or a wall unit and mount it on the wall at one end of the garage. This will hold most of your hand tools. Think locally. Use up all the space you have before you start thinking of buying extra space.

Tool shed - This is a small house built specially to store your tools. Most gardeners don't need one but if you are pressed for space, investing in one will be a good option. They are so expensive so use up all the space you can safely use in and around your house before you consider buying one. You can either hang or rack your tools in a tool shed. In addition there's extra floor space for you to park your lawn mower. You can select from a wide variety of metal, polyvinyl or wood storage sheds. More on garden tool sheds .

Outside - Water hose reels and watering cans can be stored outside. You can hang a water hose reel on the wall near the tap while a watering can be kept close to the tap. This should be done only if there isn't space to store them inside. If you have space in your garage or tool shed, it's better to store them in.

Tips on garden tool storage

Be organized. Don’t just throw all the tools into your garage or tool shed. Take time to organize them for your safety and that of your family.

Keep an inventory of the tools you have. It's not unusual for someone to buy a tool that she already has because it was well hidden in the shed.

Always clean your garden tools before you put them away for storage. It is safer, cleaner and will reduce the number of pests that infest your storage area.

When to store your garden tools

It is best to always organize and store your garden tools. But if you need to use a tool a lot during a particular period, don't store them in the innermost part of your shed. Make them accessible.

When you go on vacations and at the end of the gardening season you need to pay extra attention to garden tool storage.

Remember that storing garden tools properly will prolong their life span, keep them in safe working condition and prevent many accidents.
