Tool Shed Essentials: Garden Trowels
Ask any gardener and they'll tell you the one tool they wouldn't be without is their garden trowel. This slim-bladed shovel is useful for everything from
planting to weeding, and you’ll find that more than any other, it’s the
trowel you use most.
You’ll need a good quality garden trowel for just about everything in the
garden, from digging holes for seedlings to rooting out weeds, so it is
important to shop around and get a good quality trowel that you’re comfortable
using for extended periods of time. Look for a trowel that has a strong,
stainless steel design and sturdy construction especially where the blade
attaches to the handle.
Garden trowels come in a variety of sizes, depending on the handle or grip and
the length of the blade, usually 4-7” long. Make sure the blade is rustproof;
most good quality manufacturers will offer a guarantee or warranty on their
garden tools. If you opt for a more inexpensive trowel, you should be
aware that cheaper ones will often bend if you hit any hard soil or clay.
Always wipe your trowel clean when you’re done with it, and store it in a
dry place to ensure it doesn’t rust or warp. Some trowels have sharp or serrated
edges and are not suitable for young children.
No matter what you’re doing in the yard or garden this spring, a good quality
garden trowel is indispensable!
